Privacy policy
What this website collects, what it does not, and how to have anything about you removed.
Who we are
Open the Gait Foundation is a fundraising project of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This policy covers the website at openthegait.org only. Donations are handled on systems operated by SAMS, and their privacy policy governs those, not this one.
For anything in this policy, write to contact@openthegait.org.
What we collect
The contact form
If you use the form on our contact page, we receive your name, email address, the organization you entered if you chose to give one, the topic you selected, and your message. Those fields are the whole of it. We ask for nothing else, and the organization field is optional.
The form is delivered by Formspree, a third-party service based in the United States, which passes the message to our inbox and keeps a copy in our account there. If you would rather not use a third party, email us directly instead and the message goes only to our mailbox.
Analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views. It sets no cookies, stores no identifier on your device, and does not follow you between websites. It tells us how many people read a page, which country a visit came from, and which site linked to us. It cannot tell us who you are, and we cannot use it to single you out.
Server logs
Our host, Hostinger, records ordinary web server logs, including IP addresses, as a normal part of serving and securing the site. We do not use these logs to identify visitors.
What we do not do
- We set no cookies. None at all, which is why this site has no cookie banner.
- We store nothing in your browser: no local storage, no session storage, no fingerprinting.
- We run no advertising and no advertising trackers.
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your information, and we do not share it with anyone except as described above.
- Our fonts are served from our own server, not from Google Fonts, so loading a page tells Google nothing about you.
- We do not use your message to add you to a mailing list. If we ever start a newsletter, you will have to ask for it.
Donations
Donations are processed by SAMS. Your card details are entered on their donation platform and are never seen, handled or stored by Open the Gait Foundation or by this website. What happens to the information you give during a donation is covered by SAMS's own privacy policy at sams-usa.net.
SAMS may share your name and the amount with us so we can thank you and account for the funds. We will not publish your name as a donor without asking you first.
How long we keep things
We keep contact form messages for as long as we need them to answer you and to keep a record of the conversation, and no longer than two years after our last exchange, unless you are an active partner or donor and we need the correspondence for our records. You can ask us to delete a message sooner and we will.
Your rights
Whatever country you are in, you can ask us to:
- tell you what information about you we hold;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete it.
Email contact@openthegait.org and we will act within 30 days. There is no form to fill in and we will not ask you to justify the request.
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, the UK GDPR and the GDPR give you these rights formally, along with the right to complain to your national data protection authority. Our lawful basis for handling contact form messages is legitimate interest: you wrote to us and we are replying.
Children
This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us something, tell us and we will delete it.
Links to other websites
We link out to sources including the World Health Organization, Médecins Sans Frontières and the ICRC, to Wikimedia Commons for photograph credits, to our Instagram, and to SAMS. Once you follow a link you are on someone else's site and this policy no longer applies.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles information, we will update this page and change the date at the top. The current version was published on 11 August 2026.
