The terms you agree to by using this website, and what we do and do not promise.
Agreement
By using openthegait.org you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site. We may update them, and the date at the top of this page tells you when they last changed.
Who you are dealing with
Open the Gait Foundation is a fundraising project operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. SAMS holds and governs the funds. We are not a separate legal entity and we are not a healthcare provider.
Donations
- Who takes the money. Donations are made to the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Foundation through GiveSmart, their donation platform, under their Help 4 Amputees campaign. Their terms apply to the transaction itself.
- Tax deductibility. The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3), so donations are deductible in the United States to the full extent allowed by law. Where you receive something of value in return, such as a ticket to a fundraising event, only the amount above its fair market value is deductible. Your receipt comes from the SAMS Foundation. We are not tax advisers; check your own position if it matters to you.
- Where your money goes. We describe the current project on the donate page and we direct funds to it. Needs on the ground change, and if a project closes, is fully funded, or becomes unsafe to operate in, funds may be applied to a comparable use within the same program of prosthetic care and physiotherapy. Costs such as the roughly $350 per prosthetic figure are honest estimates, not fixed prices or guarantees.
- Refunds. Donations are generally final. If you have made a mistake, such as a duplicate or a wrong amount, contact us promptly and we will raise it with SAMS, who decide.
- Recurring gifts. If you set up a monthly donation you can cancel it at any time by contacting us or SAMS.
This site is not medical advice
Pages such as Awareness and resources explain prosthetic care and rehabilitation in general terms for a general audience. Nothing here is medical advice, a diagnosis, or a recommendation about your own care or anyone else's. Speak to a qualified clinician.
Accuracy
We cite a source for every statistic we publish and we link to it so you can check it. We take care to represent those sources correctly, but we do not control them and figures are revised over time. We give no warranty that everything on the site is complete or current, and we correct errors when we find them. If you spot one, please tell us.
Intellectual property
- The text, design and code of this site belong to Open the Gait Foundation.
- Some photographs are licensed from third parties under Creative Commons and are credited on the page or in the footer where they appear. Those photographs remain the property of their creators and carry their own license terms.
- The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Foundation name and emblem belong to them and are used with permission. Nothing here grants you any right to use them.
- You may quote and link to this site. Please do not republish it wholesale, or use our name, logo or photographs to raise money without our written permission.
Acceptable use
Do not use this site to break the law, to send us anything malicious, to attempt to gain unauthorized access to it, to scrape it in a way that degrades it for others, or to impersonate Open the Gait Foundation or SAMS. We may block access if you do.
Other websites
We link to external sources and to our partner. We do not control those sites and we are not responsible for their content or their practices.
No warranty, and limits on our liability
This site is provided as it is. We do not promise that it will always be available or error free. To the fullest extent the law allows, Open the Gait Foundation and SAMS are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of this site. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, United States, where our fiscal sponsor is registered.
